[ That'll have to do. Kano hangs up then, and focuses on making sure he knows how to find his way back to that spot in the woods, his sense of direction normally decent, but after seeing all that blood? It's the worst, this is the worst...

He's close enough that he gets to the auditorium first, hanging out by the front door with his phone on and screen shining on his face, to make up for the empty building and lack of lights around. ]

[Yuya comes running, still in his suit grom the dance with his tie off and the collar undone. Onr hand has his phone, flashlight shining, and the other has a water bottle.]

I'm here. [He starts, breathless.] We have to find him.

[ He's about to suggest that Yuya take a swig of water and calm down, but Tsuyukusa might be more dire need of it, so Kano simply starts off towards the forest, a beeline for the abandoned weapon first. There's not enough time for Yuya to catch his breath, but they aren't sprinting, as much as Kano really wants to. ]

I didn't think he'd fight anybody that's not me. Did you see him around the fight? Did he talk to anybody else? I should've kept a closer eye on him...

[Yuya doesn't even ask to pause, immediately keeping up with Kano and shining his flashlight out to navigate the path as it gets darker. He should have let Odd-Eyes know, but maybe he deserves a rest.]

No--I mean, I saw him when the daemons attacked. But I didn't see any of them leave the auditorium. [He worries over his lip.] Maybe it was one of those ghosts running around? Or the daemon controlling them...

[Yuya didn't hear if it was dealt with, only his few encounters and what he found looking up. Maybe it's related?]

[ He really thought Tsuyukusa had gone home back to the dorms after storming out on that conversation between the three of them, but that was a grave miscalculation. Stupid, stupid. Didn't he request Michael's help specifically so he could focus on looking after just Tsuyukusa and Maverick? So stupid. He couldn't even manage that. ]

No way any of the daemons could've given the faculty the slip, but they didn't immediately smite down those monsters from before, you're right. Something like that... it'd target him, wouldn't it? I wonder if he got eaten?

[ Is that what hollows do to their victims...? It's lucky that Kano escaped twice and didn't find out. ]

[Yuya shudders. Maybe. Maybe it just mauled him. Or dragged him off to be eaten by the daemon for power.]

Maybe he killed what he was fighting with. [It's a vain hope. Yuya can feel himself getting more anxious.] Was it... far?

[ Tsuyukusa's a tree/jellyfish spirit, though, can he even fight? All those opportunities to throw Kano to the ground, and he'd never done it. Kano runs a hand through his hair, shaking unnecessary thoughts out of his head, because they can speculate all they want but that won't help them figure things out as much as actually finding evidence will.

It's not very far from here, and evidenced by signs of struggle on both the ground and the surrounding trees, all of which Kano stays silent about until he comes to a stop two meters away from the bent halligan.

He throws a glance over to his side. What do you think, Yuya? Daemon? ]

[Yuya purses his lips. He's seen plenty of carnage today, but it's still unsettling seeing the weapon bent like that--last of all until they get to the blood.

Yuya glances to Kano before approaching it, flashing his light around for any other clues.]

[ This is about as far as Kano had got before turning right around and calling Yuya before he gets way in over his head, so this will have to be the start of his investigation too, gaze following the light that Yuya shines around. ]

...Those footprints are mine, straight here and then I turned around to get you, see? But it's all a mess out there, I dunno how many people there were. Was Tsuyukusa wearing your shoes, do you know? What's your shoe size?

I only have one pair of dress shoes. [The ones on his feet right now, so they must have been Toki's. He's searching desperately for anything that proves an untimely end, or a direction of where they went.] Otherwise it's just your tracks, right? So the others must be...

[Well, there was a tussle so a lot of it is just dragged around.]

[ Does Toki know his own shoe size...? He should be drunk off his ass right now and/or in the middle of something, so Kano nixes the idea of texting him to see, he probably wouldn't be a reliable historian anyways. ]

The others are other people's, yeah. I guess it doesn't matter, though- try to find one that leads away from all of this, and we'll tail after 'em.

[Yuya nods, slowly, and starts to the left. It doesn't take too much further, maybe a couple feet to the side to find shreddings of his tie--and probably non-descript pieces of other clothes.

He circles around, though the cloth doesn't make a trail exactly to a smaller pool of blood on the opposite side of a tree. and in it, one of a tree-like horns that Tsuyukusa had shown off just earlier that night.

Yuya sways, dropping to his knees with a gasp.] No...

The cloth Kano can give a pass to, things easily caught and torn up running through a forest, but the horns? Easily mistakable for one of the many fallen branches in the forest if it weren't for all that blood.

He can feel his stomach churning just looking at it, but still he forces himself to step forward and crouch in front of the horn- mostly to cut it off from view so Yuya doesn't have to see, from where he'd sat down. ]

...Yuya. Focus on me for a sec. I know you have better morals than I do, but will you listen to a request of mine?

[Yuya covers his mouth, hand trembling as his gaze washes with tears. He doesn't want to believe it, but with the amount of blood they just left behind... could even Tsuyukusa survive something like this.

He at least isn't focused on it long, when Kano steps in the way. Yuya looks up at him, swallowing and lowering his hand.] What...?

[ His head's still bowed, staring down at the bloodied horn, so that even when he knows that he should turn and face Yuya when asking something of him, he doesn't, leaving Yuya to stare at the back of his head instead. ]

Don't tell anybody. Don't get anybody else involved- none of the faculty, nobody. I don't want this to blow up, for there to be an investigation, for Toki to have to find out this way. Tsuyukusa would've wanted- he doesn't want Toki to know, right? He's supposed to have just disappeared. Let's let him disappear.

[ Let's... cover this up. Let's be accomplices to murder. ]

[Yuya's gaze slowly falls back to the floor, his arms hanging heavy at his side. Let's let him disappear...

It isn't fair. This wasn't how he was supposed to 'disappear'. Would he have run off so quickly, to try and get away when there was something dangerous, had Yuya not said anything? Did he push him into this?]

O--[Yuya chokes, and then he can't hold back sobbing anymore.] O-Okay.

[ God damn it, Yuya, you are the THIRD person Kano's made cry today, this is the worst Valentines Day of his life. ]

Okay.

[ In contrast to Yuya's sobbing, Kano doesn't let any of that show— not outwardly, never outwardly, he can cry and wail and curse the world but he will never let anybody see, not in a time like this. Instead, he finally gets up and takes those two, three steps to face Yuya, drops down onto his knees right in front of him, and spreads his arms. ]

...Yuya, come here. It'll be okay. I'll take care of it.

[Once it starts, Yuya's body shakes in a torrent of weeping. He hunches over, trying to stifle himself until Kano crouches down at spreads his arms wide. Yuya doesn't look up when he hears him come closer. It takes a moment before he realizes why he's so close, and then he tips over until his forehead hits Kano's shoulder, burying his face in his hand while the other grips his pants.]

I'm s-sorry! I'm sorry I'm s-so sorry, if I didn't--if I didn't open my big, stupid mouth back there... [If he hadn't talked like he knew better, hadn't cornered him, hadn't failed to check on him after the fight. Hadn't, hadn't, hadn't, because it's always doing the wrong thing at the wrong time.]

[ The apologies come and Kano bites at his bottom lip, wrapping his arms around Yuya's shoulders, hands pressed against the back of his head so that those sobs are muffled in Kano's shoulder. For once he doesn't talk, doesn't refute those sorries like his knee-jerk reaction is to, because Yuya's crying and what he needs right now is to just let it all out, cry out his grievances here so that he doesn't completely break down in front of Toki later— it'll have to be him, in the end, as much as Kano wants to take that on himself.

In the end, it's Yuya who knows Toki better, and it's Yuya who will know the first words to say, things to do.

So, while he doesn't agree with any of what Yuya's saying or thinking, he won't interrupt. ]

[Without a conversation to keep going, Yuya's words putter out and leave him only with muffled sobs. It goes on for minutes, Yuya's hands slowly finding their way to tangle into Kano's hoodie and cling to the fabric until he finally runs out of tears. Then his throat hurts, his face is gross, his breathing stumbles on hiccups as he slowly tries to compose himself. He's really no good.

He shifts, his whole body feeling heavy as he tries to pull away from Kano, face red and stained from tears.]

[ Once Yuya's cried himself dry, Kano gives him one last pat on the head before letting him go and sitting back, feeling strangely bereft in the silence and the cold that rushes in between them. He lets out a breath, as low and steady as he can manage, and pushes off his knees onto his feet first so he can help Yuya up after.

It's not Yuya's fault, and it's the hardest thing in the world to change one's mind of once they're convinced of their own guilt. He knows he won't ever be able to shift the guilt and take it upon himself, as much as he wants to shoulder it all if that means Yuya doesn't have to, but it doesn't work that way, does it? It doesn't. But they can always share the guilt; it doesn't have to be only Yuya's burden. ]

Let's go home, for now. We're both to blame, Yuya. I'm at fault too. But we can also remember him, can't it? Make sure his memory isn't forgotten. It's something we can do for him.

[ His memory. ]

[Yuya looks up at Kano, breathing deep in some hope of steadying himself, before taking Kano's hand in helping himself up.

The same way, Yuya doesn't argue with Kano's claim of fault. Even if a part of him is certain he was the tipping point, that Kano could have salvaged it if he didn't intervene.]

His memory... [They'll both claim part of the blame, but that means they share the burden of that future as well. He's right, Tsuyukusa needs to be remembered.

He looks to the side, away from the blood and the horn.] Maybe a shrine...

[He was a tree spirit, after all. Kind of like a kami.]

[ A shrine... like a grave stone, it'll be a constant reminder of their failures, made real and tangible. But they owe it to him, don't they. ]

A shrine sounds good. By a tree close to the dorms, since that's what he originally was, and then it's like he's still watching over... [ Toki.

But maybe Yuya doesn't want to look out his window and have that constant reminder of a shrine. Kano's room is a floor directly above, so every time he looks out the window, it'd be there too.

Toki, though... ]

Sorry, but can I entrust you to talk to Toki about it? About his pet jellyfish.

[Yuya nods, reaching to wipe his face, desperately trying to clear it.] I'll--I'll talk to him. Tell him it died overnight, and...

[He bites his lip and tries really hard not to start crying again. It's really a good thing Toki doesn't show up until well in the morning.]

...Yeah.

[ That's all Yuya has to say. Something simple like that, that Kano can't bring himself to tell Toki because—- he's so selfish. He just doesn't want to give Toki any more reason to hate him. ]

I'll check up on you tomorrow, okay? Would that be okay?
