[He could have had a proper bed for months if he didn't lose her tank and misuse the heat lamp.

Yuya doesn't react to a lizard on his stomach, peacefully asleep. For a while, at least.

It's not quite an hour when he starts whimpering something stirring in place.]

[ Kano stays awake the entire time, tapping on his phone and snacking on a little baggie of stale pretzels he found in his jacket pocket, when he hears the skittering of Nightmare's feet on the hardwood floor as she slips off Yuya's stomach and glares balefully up at Kano.

Alright, alright... Quietly, he switches on the recorder on his phone, and hops off the bed to place Nightmare back on top of the mattress. He can sit on top of the desk for the rest of the night, he'd slept some during the day already anyways. ]

[For all Yuya's shifting, he doesn't really roll out of place more than sluggishly trashing his head and, occasionally, his arm. A minute passes, two, and he still seems caught up in his dream.] No... why...

[ Mm... They should maybe rethink bunkbeds in the dorms for all the nightmarers; even if Yuya doesn't move a lot when he sleeps, it's still a possibility. Maybe padded walls like they have in seclusion rooms, those would be helpful too. Those are the sorts of notes he takes on his phone while he watches Yuya's agitated sleep.

Don't do anything yet, he urges himself, though it's hard not to do anything about distress right in front of him. He has to wait and see, know more before acting. ]

[It's a very muted distress, fighting through sleep, and it's only through the quiet that Yuya's mumbling is easy to make out.] Stop... no, no...

[A whimpering sound, and then Yuya finally manages to roll himself to his side with a shudder, the pillow muffling his sleeptalking.]

[ Don't do anything, don't do anything, Kano tells himself as he hops off the desk with the intention of doing something. And that something is to try and tug the pillow out from under Yuya's head as carefully as he can so he can record something actually legible, sorry you're going to be waking up to a stiff neck tomorrow morning. ]

[Despite the nightmare, Yuya makes a blind grab for the pillow when it's tugged away. Not enough to actually claim it, but on some level he can tell that the softness is leaving.

Mostly, though, he's stuck in his thoughts. It's wordless, pained whimpers for a while, breaths barely forming words that keep pleading for mercy from... whatever.

Then a sharp whine from his throat and he tenses.] ...ll pay... you'll all... pay...

[ Oh, yikes. Even though Kano feels bad about taking the pillow away and tossing it up onto the bed for Nightmare to have instead of doing the smart thing and using it for himself, he's glad he came down off the desk, otherwise he might have missed what Yuya is saying.

Mercy... vengeance... That's not the Yuya that he knows.

Quietly, Kano sits down next to him, knees drawn to his chest and voice soft and low. ]

Pay for what?

[Yuya hisses, short between his teeth.] This. Traitors... after I... why...

[ Traitors...? Kano purses his lips, trying to think of what Yuya could be talking about. Traitor... somebody who betrayed him... Maybe he's talking about Kano? He has no idea who else would be a traitor but himself. But, that's traitors in plural, and- ahh, no point in thinking too hard about it, better get as much out of Yuya while he's still asleep. ]

Dunno why. What did they do?

Though you... kill... I'll get out--[Yuya twitches and whimpers, suddenly pained despite the harsh tone just before. The next words come out too slurred to decipher.]

Eh...

[ Was this something that Toki had written about? Absently, Kano digs into his pocket trying to find that notebook again, his other hand reaching over to pat Yuya on the head, as if that would do anything to calm him down. ]

Killed... somebody you know? Family?

[ Get out where??? Where is Toki's notebook, he needs more context for this... ]

[His response is more of an awkward sound than words, and in a minute Yuya seems to have calmed down, his posture falling limp and breathing steady as the worst of that nightmare passes.

Toki's notebook, if he can parse the French, is filled with some similar things. Fragmented details of of Yuya hating someone (or someone's), killing them, being killed, being hurt. There's some burning things in there, too.

But nothing with a strong enough clue for the actual scene Yuya seems to be experiencing in his nightmare. Just that it's full of pain--seemingly, he's causing a lot of it.]

[ Kano's French is pretty terrible without a translator, more or less capable of casual conversation but things like pain and death and burning aren't really things that come up in casual conversation.

Yuya seems to have quieted down a little too, and Kano worries at his bottom lip for a moment trying to decide whether he should pursue it and try asking something else, or if he should let Yuya get whatever rest he's capable of while he can. Something heavy and sugary right before bedtime, coupled with the hardwood floor aren't going to help matters either.

At the end, he decides on just a little more, still stroking Yuya's head. ]

Hey... if you're still there. What is it that you want? Something I can do?

[There's nothing, then, except for Yuya sleeping. Whatever was happening in that nightmare seems to have passed. Of course, there's still hours to go.

At least now he looks peaceful, strangely serene without the usual parade of expressions that usually crosses his face.]

[ Aaaaaaaand, he's asleep. Kano huffs out a sigh, giving Yuya's head one last pat before getting up to his feet. Dreams come and go in three hour cycles, he believes, so he'll stick it out until dawn before going to bed and pretending he was asleep this entire time.

For now, he climbs back up onto his desk and gets his notebook out to start transcribing what he has so far, brainstorm a little, maybe have a couple of tea bags on hand to suck on when he's feeling sleepy. ]

[There's a moment where Yuya blindly grabs for his absent pillow, rolling over and tucking his arm under his head when he can't find it. And there's peace for a few hours, at least, Yuya's dreams not seeming to shake him beyond the occasional muffled mumble.

It's another hour before a choked, hiccup sound comes from Yuya and he stretches and arm.]

[ Even just one hour of peace and quiet makes Kano antsy, especially the idea of just falling asleep like he wants to but it's too hard with somebody else in the room, somebody he needs to look over because this is more important than getting rest. Every time Yuya turns in his sleep or makes any sort of noise, Kano looks over at him, still and quiet until it passes, but something that sounds like a sob has him hopping off the desk again to crouch next to Yuya's side.

What's up now... He reaches over and holds Yuya's outstretched hand. Normal nightmare, or bloody death and fire nightmare?? ]

[These are basically the same thing for Yuya.

He doesn't seem to actually be choking at least, so much as trying to cry and unable to because his body can only react so much right now.

It wanes slightly when Kano grabs his hand, and he weakly grasps his back.]

[ Yuya needs some normal nightmares, like going to school in his underwear or being chased through a parking garage by an old woman carrying a chainsaw.

There's another moment's hesitance before Kano squeezes Yuya's hand back, because he wants to comfort him but he also needs to make this worse before things can get better. There is no Yuya awake to tell him this is a bad idea, so Kano goes ahead with it, adopting the exact same voice Yuya had been speaking in before and echoing those words, trying to prompt Yuya back into the same mindset. ]

Traitors... you'll pay for killing... [ Killing what? who? Yuya, help him out here. ]

[Yuya twitches, falling silent and still for a moment.]

Who...? [He sounds confused. Isn't that his voice?]

[ It's his voice because it's Yuya, obviously!!!! Kano also frowns and looks confused, switching back to his own voice, quiet whispers. ]

Yeah, that's it, I want to know who died! I'll deal with those traitors, too!

[His expression scrunches slightly, displeased.] Humans... treacherous, I'll make them...

[Pay.] Get... me...

[ Humans—- ehh, it's like when Kano talks about humans because he doesn't feel like he deserves to be included in them, but it's jarring hearing the same sort of thing from Yuya. ]

Did humans die, or are humans traitors? Which ones...

[This isn't exactly following his memory anymore, dream logic starting to warp it in Yuya's mind to make sense. There's what, some smaller demon here?]
